Lift the Leopard download quarantine
07/08/08
OS X Leopard tags web downloads as such and then warns you about running downloaded apps or scripts. Archived (e.g. zipped) files inherit the tag from their tagged container.
Stick Unquarantine.scpt in ~/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts.
Go to ~/Downloads or wherever your downloads go.
Right-click, More > Configure Folder Actions…. Check "Enable Folder Actions". Attach the "Unquarantine" action to the folder.

Note that, quite obviously, the folder action only applies to that folder. If you download a file to a directory without this folder action attached, Leopard is free to nag again.

What the F#@%!!!!
05/13/08
Have you ever needed to match a specific typeface just like the one used in a Publication, Corporate Identity, or an Ad Campaign and you find yourself spending an hour flipping thru old font specimen books! Well now put down the font books and just check out WhatTheFont Font Recognition System! Just upload a scanned image of the font and it instantly finds the closest match. If you don't have a scanned image but you do have a sample of the typeface the FontSearchEngine website will ask you a series of questions about the typeface and will return a font search based on your answers. It's pretty amazing how close this search engine is. Give either of these websites a chance next time you're struggling to match an existing font.

Print Finder Directories in Leopard
03/03/08
Have you ever been looking at a list of files in your Finder Window and wanted to print the list? In Mac OS X 10.5, Finder doesn't contain any easy Print command to do this. However, there is a workaround to print the directory listing.
This tip is going to require the use of a Desktop Printer.
How to Create a Desktop Printer:
1. Open System Preferences>Print & Fax.
2. Click on the printer that you want to become your desktop printer.
3. Now drag that printer to your Desktop.
4. Now you have a printer icon on your desktop.
To print, simply 'drag & drop' a printable file onto your new 'desktop printer'.
With a few exceptions, you can print almost any document this way.
To print a directory of a disc or folder:
1. From your Finder Window, in the middle of the toolbar is a tiny icon, called the PROXY icon. To print the current directory click and drag that proxy icon onto your desktop printer.
2. After you have done this, Up will pop a print dialog box. From there you can preview the printout, save it as PDF, or Print it to your printer.
3. Now you should have either a screen or paper printout from the option you selected. It will show the Filenames, Sizes, and Dates - in Alphabetical order.

Apple Keyboard (2007): New key placement and functionality
12/11/07
The aluminum Apple Keyboard (2007) has several new features. One of the most noticeable changes is that it includes additional media keys and newly-labeled keys for Exposé and Dashboard. F7 thru F12 now do the audio functions. This causes issues with those F keys when using other applications. You can disable these Apple functions and return your new aluminum Apple Keyboard to use the function keys like the older keyboards by opening the "Keyboard & Mouse" system preferences and selecting the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys".

Fix Flaky Files
09/14/07
If your InDesign file is behaving erratically, it may be damaged. One easy troubleshooting technique is to choose File > Export and export the file in the InDesign Interchange format. This will create an .inx file. When you open the .inx file, InDesign rebuilds the file from the ground up -- hopefully without the problems of the original.

Spotlight Contacts With Mail
09/14/07
Have you ever been using Apple's Mail program and you wanted to run a spotlight search on someone you are corresponding with via email? This can be extremely handy when you are trying to pull up files, emails, addresses, etc (anything spotlight can search) about this particular person.
1. Open Mail
2. Select a message and notice in the reading pane (that's the window that actually contains the message) you will see the From and To fields. Simply hold down Control and Click on a persons name. If you have a two button mouse, you can also right click on the name.
3. When then contextual menu appears, you'll notice that you now have an extra item that says 'Spotlight" and then the name of your contact. Select it.
4. Now up pops a spolight window searching you Mac for previous references to this person.
This also works to search for the address book, as well.
You can choose for Adobe® Photoshop® to disable or force VM Buffering via two optional plug-ins.
If you use very large documents and have no problems with pauses during painting, you should install the Force VM Buffering plug-in. If you do not use very large documents or have problems with pauses during painting, we recommend that you install the Disable VM Buffering plug-in.

Disable PDF viewing
06/21/07
If you click on a link to a PDF document in Safari 2.0, the browser automatically loads the PDF in its current window. If you’d rather view the PDF in Preview or Acrobat, or download it, you have to wait for it to load and then manually save it to your hard drive.
But you can make Safari 2.0 treat PDFs the way Safari 1.X did (that is, save them to your default download folder or have then launch Acrobat)
Remove the "Adobe PDFViewer.plugin" from the Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder.
Launch Acrobat, a Repair Setup dialog screen will ask to install the plugin that you just removed.
UnCheck the "Adobe PDFViewer Safari Plugin" then click continue...

Easy fix!
Locate your QuarkXPress 6.XX folder in Applications and delete the file XPress6.XX.dat and then relaunch Quark.

Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
06/12/07
Do you have a lot of stuff in your mailbox? Never clean it out? Well, if you leave too much stuff in there you might find yourself saying, "My stuff! It's... GONE?!"
Don't worry, all those things you had in Mail are not history. Your email messages haven't really gone anywhere, but the Mail mailbox may appear empty if you let several hundred MB of messages and attachments (or more!) pile up, regardless of how much free space is on your hard disk.
How large does the mailbox have to be for this to happen? With Mac OS X 10.4 or later, 2.0 GB or larger. With Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.3.9, there's not a specific size where this will always occur--the mailbox could be anywhere from a few hundred megabytes (MB) to over a gigabyte (GB) large. However, the bigger your mailbox (or combination of mailboxes) is, the more likely it is this could occur.
When this happens, Mail might display this alert:
"Message has not been downloaded from the server, take this account online to view."
Great, so how can I get to my stuff?
Try these tips:
1. Update to the latest version of Mac OS X 10.3 or 10.4.
2. From the Mailbox menu, choose Rebuild.
3. Quit Mail and open it again.
If that doesn't bring back your missing emails then Reindex all your messages:
1. Quit Mail.
2. In the Finder go to ~/Library/Mail/
3. Move the Envelope Index file to a different location, such as your desktop.
4. Move any folders in ~/Library/Mail/ that begin with "Mac-", "Exchange-", or "IMAP-" to a different location, such as your desktop.
5. Open Mail. Mail will reindex all messages. This process may take several minutes depending on how many messages you have in your mailboxes.

Deleting and Recovering a Keychain
5/31/07
If your keychain has become inaccessible for some reason (for example, if you've forgotten the password), you can delete it and manually create a new keychain.
1. Open Keychain Access, located in /Applications/Utilities.
2. Choose Edit > Keychain List, then select the keychain you want to delete.
3. Click Delete (-).
Deleting the keychain removes the keychain from the Keychains list but does not remove the keychain file from your disk.
If after deleting your keychain you remember your password later, you can recover the items stored in the keychain.
1. Open Keychain Access, located in /Applications/Utilities.
2. Choose Edit > Keychain List and adding this file select (+).
3. Select the keychain file. and Click "Open"
In most cases this file is called "login.keychaine" and it should be located:
/Users/<user name>/Library/Keychains/login.keychain

Go Directly From Your Video Camera Into QuickTime
4/12/07
There’s a very cool feature that sneaked into QuickTime Pro 7 that has kind of flown below the radar so far. It’s the ability to record directly from your digital video camera (or a microphone) right into a QuickTime fIle, without having to go through iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or a third-party application.
Just connect your digital video camera (or even your iSight camera), launch the QuickTime Pro Player, then from the File menu choose New Movie Recording. A QuickTime window will open showing you a preview of what your camera is seeing. Now just click the round red record button at the bottom of the QuickTime window and it starts recording. Click the stop button when you’re done and you’ve got an instant QuickTime movie. It works the same way for recording audio using your Mac’s built-in microphone (provided of course that your Mac actually does have a built-in mic), but instead of choosing New Movie Recording, you’ll choose New Audio Recording. Note: you have to upgrade from the standard QuickTime to QuickTime Pro to have access to this feature.

Create an Encrypted Disk Image
3/14/07
It's a good idea to keep sensitive data inside an encrypted disk image -- especially if you are a notebook user. With OS X, standard read/write disk images take up all of the disk space you allocate to them initially during creation, but with a sparse disk image, you can create an encrypted disk image that will only grow in size when you add files to them.
1. Open 'Disk Utility'.
2. Choose 'New Image'
3. Create a name for the disc image.
- Select your maximum size that you want the disk to grow to
- Select AES 128 encryption
- Select Sparse Disk Image
- Then click "Create"
4. Select a password. UNCHECK 'add to keychain'.
5. Your disk image will be created.
6. Now you can drag/drop files into your disk image. When you are done, eject the disk until you need to use it again.

Migrating from PPC to Intel-Macs
3/14/07
Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using
Use
Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
/Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

To change the default font:
1. Quit Illustrator.
2. In the Adobe Illustrator [version] /Plug-ins folder, copy the current default startup file--Adobe Illustrator Startup_CMYK or Adobe Illustrator Startup_RGB--and save it with a different name. (This creates a copy of the original startup file in case you need it again.)
3. Open one of the default startup files (Adobe Illustrator Startup_CMYK or Adobe Illustrator Startup_RGB, depending on which type of document you intend to use).
4. Choose Window > Type > Character Styles.
5. Select the Normal Character Style and choose Character Style Options from the palette menu.
6. Select Basic Character Formats and choose the desired font from the Font Family menu.
7. Click OK, and save the new file as Adobe Illustrator Startup _CMYK or Adobe Illustrator Startup_RGB in the Plug-ins folder.

Making ZIP Files (Compressed Files)
12/18/06
Create ZIP compressed files from within the OS. To create a compressed file, either Control-click on the file and choose Create Archive, Or you can click on a file, then go to the Action menu (the button that looks like a gear up in the Finder window’s toolbar), and choose Create Archive from there. Either way, it quickly creates a new file, with the file extension “.zip.” This is the compressed file. You can also compress several different files (like three, for example) into one single archive file — just Command-click (or Shift-click contiguous files) on all the files you want included, then choose Create Archive of X Items from the Action menu. A file will be created named “Archive.zip” (that’s it!). By the way, if someone sends you a ZIP file, don’t sweat it — just double-click it and Tiger will automatically decompress it.

Self-Contained InDesign Files
09/30/06
One of the most-frequently overlooked InDesign features is the ability to embed linked files, such as images, right inside the layout file. InDesign doesn't have that option in its Place dialog box; all imported images are linked by default. You can see which files are linked to your layout by looking at the Links palette. When a placed image or PDF is embedded, InDesign doesn't need the external native file to print or export to PDF properly. If someone else needs to work on the layout, all they need is the layout file and the fonts.
How to Embed
Open the Links palette from the Window menu and select the linked file(s) you want to embed. Then from the Links palette menu, choose Embed File. You're done. You'll see that embedding a linked file doesn't delete its entry from the Links palette, instead it adds a little icon to the right indicating it's an embedded file. You can double-click the entry to see the path to the original image it embedded.
The path that Link Info shows to the embedded image is just there as a sort of historical record. You can move, rename, modify or even delete that external file, and nothing changes in your layout or in Link Info. You don't get a "modified" or "missing" alert because InDesign is no longer tracking it. You've captured all the data from the external file at that point in time and saved it in the layout file.
How to Unembed
Change your mind? You can always Unembed, even if the original file is long gone. Select the embedded file entry in the Links palette and choose Unembed File from the Links palette menu. An alert immediately asks if you want to re-link to the original file or have InDesign create a new file.

Select Similar
09/25/06
I often want to select layers that are the same kind -- all the text layers, for example, or all the raster layers and not the vector or type layers. That's why I was happy to see a new command, Select Similar Layers, that does just that. Select a layer and choose the command, and magically, all the other layers that are the same kind become selected.
I'll wait here for a second while you look for the command. La da da, la da di. Couldn't find it, could you? That's because you looked in the obvious places, my child. It's not in the Layer menu nor in the Layer palette menu. It's hiding in plain sight in the Select menu (Select > Similar Layers) which I grudgingly concede is the logical home. Good news, the Select Similar Layers command is also hiding in the contextual menu -- right-click on a layer to access it.

INSTANT DOCK RESIZE
9/15/06
If you want to make the Dock larger or smaller, there's a slider in the Dock preference pane, but you don't have to use it. Ever. That's because you can simply put your cursor right over the divider line on the right side of the Dock (the one that separates your apps from your folders and Trash) and your cursor will change to a horizontal bar with two arrows: one facing up and one facing down. When it does that, just click-and-drag your cursor upward to make the Dock bigger and downward to shrink it.

9/1/06
Want to see the date in the menubar, as seen at right? Start by opening the International Preferences panel, and clicking the Formats tab.
In the Dates section, click Customize. Click the Show pop-up and select your choice of Short, Medium, etc. Now place the elements you want in the small "work area," by dragging and dropping them from the Date Elements section. Once placed, you can click on some elements to see other options (Wednesday or Wed, for instance). Once you've built the date string you want, click once in the work area, and hit Command-A then Command-C to select the string and copy it. Now click Cancel to close the window without making any changes.
In the Times section, click Customize, and set the Show pop-up to Medium. In the small work area below the pop-up, place the curser where you want the date elements to start, and click to position the cursor. Now hit Command-V to paste the elements you just copied. You can further add characters and spaces to customize the look. If you want to remove an element (i.e. the year), click on it and use the Delete key. Click OK, and you'll see the results in the menubar.

About image tile size in Photoshop CS2
Activating the Bigger Tiles plug-in:
Adobe Photoshop CS2 uses complex memory management procedures. On computers with 1 GB of RAM or more, you can optimize Photoshop to take advantage of the quantity of RAM in your system and manage memory more efficiently.
About image tile size in Photoshop CS2:
When Photoshop processes image data, it divides the image into sections called tiles. By default, the maximum size of each tile is 132 KB of RAM.
You can activate the Bigger Tiles plug-in to increase the tile size. If you assign 261 MB to 1 GB of RAM to the Memory & Image Cache preference in Photoshop, the tile size increases to 260 KB. Likewise, if you assign more than 1 GB RAM, the tile size increases to 1 MB. Activating the plug-in reduces the overall amount of time Photoshop takes to process an image, especially on computers with more than 1 GB of RAM.
After you activate the Bigger Tiles plug-in, Photoshop takes longer to draw each tile and may appear to draw images on screen slower, especially large images or when applying some filters. However, the total time Photoshop needs to display the entire image is less because it has fewer tiles to draw.
Activating the Bigger Tiles plug-in -
To enable the Bigger Tiles plug-in:
1. Quit Photoshop.
2. Locate the ~Bigger Tiles plug-in file:
-- Mac OS: Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS2/Plug-Ins/Adobe Photoshop Only/Extensions/Bigger Tiles
-- Windows: Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS2/Plug-Ins/Adobe Photoshop Only/Extensions/Bigger Tiles
3. Rename the file, removing the tilde (~) from the file name.
4. Start Photoshop.
